Decades ago, Mattel released a toy consisting of a plastic glasses capable of playing small 3D content that appeared on disks. He was called View-Master, arrived in Brazil by the Star and can still be found in online commerce sites.
But what does this have to do with tech news? It is that Google, in partnership with Mattel, the toy revived and transformed the product in a virtual reality goggles for the children. The idea is still create animations and unique experiences for young people, but from a technique that is more fashionable today.
Basically, it is a variant of the Project Cardboard, virtual reality goggles inexpensive presented by Google using a smartphone coupled to generate special effects.
The product was six months in development: he won a new design to look more realistic and still uses the same film rolls, which are now storage media. Content can also be bought by Google Play.
From Another World
The teaser released to spread the word and shows the operation of the apparatus: you place the smartphone on View-Master with the Free Application toy in operation, makes the drive on a surface and wait virtual reality start.
In immersion, you can access educational content and explanatory texts about what you are seeing. Cardboard apps also work here: the idea is that this is the first experience of children with 3D and augmented reality.
Mattel studies revive the old animations so renewed to also win the heart of the most nostalgic adults – and Disney, now with Marvel and Star Wars content, has numerous commercial alternatives.
The View-Master is likely to be sold from September 2015 and will cost $ 30 (about £ 85) the unity of the glasses with the four-disc play package costing half that price. For now, there is no information on a possible arrival in Brazil.
